FAQ

Does it actually taste like real mapo tofu? Yes. The flavor comes from real Pixian doubanjiang, the fermented broad bean chili paste that defines Sichuan cooking, plus real Sichuan peppercorn. It won't be identical to a wok-fresh version, but it's the genuine flavor profile, not a generic spicy seasoning.

How spicy is it? It's a proper Sichuan heat with the signature málà tingle, but still with the idea that you won't need to find an emergency bathroom in the woods. If you love spice, you'll be happy. If you're heat-sensitive, add a little extra water to soften it.

Does it have real tofu, or just protein crumbles? Real tofu, freeze dried and rehydrated, not a textured-protein substitute. It comes back to a soft, bouncy texture in about fifteen minutes, which is the part most freeze dried meals can't pull off.

How long does it take to rehydrate? About 15 minutes with roughly 1.25 cups (295 mL) of boiling water, poured straight into the pouch. The tofu needs that full time to soften properly, so don't rush it.

Is one pouch enough for dinner? For most people, yes. It's a single serve at 600 calories, which is real fuel after a long day. Big appetites or high-mileage days might want a side or a second pouch.

How much protein does it have? 22 grams, fully plant-based, largely from the tofu and soy. That's a strong number for a meal this light.

Isn't mapo tofu made with pork? Is this really vegan? Traditional mapo tofu often includes ground pork, but the defining flavor comes from the doubanjiang and Sichuan peppercorn, not the meat. This version is fully vegan and still tastes like the dish, with the tofu as the star.

Do I need a stove or a bowl? No bowl and no extra pot. The flat-bottom pouch stands on its own and works as the cooking vessel, then zips closed to reseal. You just need a way to boil about a cup and a quarter of water.

What are the allergens? Is it gluten free? It's vegan but not gluten free. It contains soy, wheat, and sesame, so it isn't suitable if you avoid gluten or any of those. The full ingredient list is on the pouch.

How long does it last in storage? It's sealed in a Mylar pouch with an oxygen absorber for long-term storage, so it holds up in a pack, a gear bin, or an emergency kit. Check the printed date on the pouch for the exact shelf life.
