FAQ
FAQ
Does it actually taste like Korean bulgogi? Yes! It's built on a real marinade of soy, toasted sesame, garlic, ginger, and Asian pear, which is what gives bulgogi its sweet-savory depth. It won't be identical to a fresh-grilled version off the pan, but it's a genuine bulgogi profile, not a generic teriyaki-style "Asian glaze."
How long does it take to rehydrate? About 12 minutes with roughly 1.25 cups (295 mL) of boiling water, poured straight into the pouch. Stir at the start, then let it rest.
Do I need a stove or a bowl? No bowl and no extra pot. The flat-bottom pouch stands on its own and doubles as the cooking vessel, then zips closed to reseal. You just need a way to boil about a cup and a quarter of water.
Is one pouch enough for dinner? For most people, yes! it's a single serve at 660 calories, which is solid fuel after a long day. If you have a big appetite or you're burning hard miles, you might add a side or fold it into a larger spread.
How much protein does it have? 19 grams, fully plant-based, from marinated soy/textured protein. That's a meaningful amount for a trail meal this light.
I've had mushy vegan trail meals before. What's the texture like? That's the main thing we built around. The marinated soy protein rehydrates to a tender, meaty chew rather than going crumbly or soft. The full 12-minute soak matters here. Rush it and it'll come out firmer than ideal.
What's in it, and what are the allergens? It's fully vegan. It contains soy, wheat, sesame, and sulfites, so it isn't suitable if you avoid gluten or any of those. The complete ingredient list is printed on the pouch.
How long does it last in storage? It's sealed in a Mylar pouch with an oxygen absorber for long-term storage, so it holds up well in a pack, a gear bin, or an emergency kit. Check the printed date on the pouch for the exact shelf life.
How spicy is it? It isn't a spicy dish — bulgogi is savory-sweet, not hot. If you want heat, it takes well to a pinch of gochugaru or your own hot sauce stirred in after rehydrating.
Is it worth $14.99? Fair question — it costs more than a brick of ramen. What you're paying for is real protein, real calories, and an authentic flavor most ultralight meals don't deliver. If cheapest-cost-per-meal is your only metric, this isn't it; if you care about eating something good after a hard day, it earns its price.

Enjoyed this under Mt. Fitz Roy in the Argentinian Andes a few days ago. Thoroughly impressed with the unique flavor. Will definitely get more. I've tried scores and scores of vegan backpacking meals, and this was a refreshing change. Well done. I did have a problem re-sealing the bag for cooking, but that might have been on me.
I inhaled this after a long day of trail maintenance. The flavor is great but I wish it had a tiny bit more going on texturally as it was a bit one (yummy) note.
